iBurst Frequently Asked Questions.
Can I share my iBurst connection with others?
Yes. The desktop modem provides a broadband link to a local network which may be a traditional wired LAN or a wireless LAN using an 802.11x access point.
(Please note that this requires a broadband router sold separately)
Can I use an external antenna with my iBurst user terminal?
Yes. Only iBurst recommended external antennas from a supplier approved by iBurst should be used.
Does it matter where I put my device on my premises?
Yes. IBurst units should not be deep within houses or businesses or below ground level, preferably place your device near a window. with as clear a line to base stations as possible so as not to cause connection problems.
How do I find out if my area is covered by an iBurst Tower?

How do I send outgoing email & receive incoming email?
Subscribers can send emails by setting the outgoing SMTP server address to smtp.iburst.co.za and can receive mails by setting their incoming POP3 server address to pop3.iburst.co.za in their email program (e.g. MS Outlook or MS Outlook Express)
How is my bandwidth consumption measured?
Bandwidth is measured by counting all packet traffic originating from & destined to the session IP address of your connection. This consumption is session based & is reflected on the bandwidth monitor once a session is closed, meaning that if the session lasts over several days, it'll only be reflected on the bandwidth monitor on the day the session is disconnected.
What are good locations for iBurst devices?
Any areas that are not too built up or dense ie: close to window with not too many trees in the way, not on the floor, rather a window sill. Some people find it works wonderfully in an airtight container in the roof of the house.
What are the bad locations for iBurst devices?
Electrified fencing - Placement where signal goes through electrified fencing can deteriorate throughput badly.
Tennis court fencing - Signal going through tennis court fencing to your base station can deteriorate throughput badly.
Dense tree growth - Dense tree growth in line with your base station can deteriorate signal
Burglar proofing - Burglar proofing can cause your signal to deteriorate, place device antenna past the steel bars
Walls - Walls bounce signal, preferably try to place the device to have a clear line to the base station
Window tinting - Certain types of window tinting have ben know to deteriorate signal quality
Security gates - If working in a office with a security gate the bars may deteriorate the signal quality
Window blinds - Window blinds manufactured of steel can reflect your signal, open them to improve
What hardware does iBurst support e.g. laptops, desktops, handheld's?
iBurst supports laptops & desktops. It’ll be available for PDA’s in the near future.
